A special one-day workshop on

Asian and American Youth Heritage Awareness, Personal and Leadership Development

BACKGROUND:  Since the mid 1980s, members of the San Antonio Asian community have gathered together almost every year to promote and share their cultures with the rest of the city.  Through their particular group celebrations and the Asian Festival, countless children of Asian immigrants have come to learn about their unique customs and traditions. Now, as the world becomes more technologically complex and accessible, the Asian American community recognizes the importance of global education for their children and the imperative of providing them with the knowledge and skills they need in growing up as Asian Americans in a mainstream yet increasingly international environment. This Asian and American Youth Cultural Heritage and Leadership Development Workshop is a significant step toward this goal.

PURPOSE:  Our specific objectives for this workshop are to enable young Asian Americans and non-Asian students to know more about their ethnic origins and values, to encourage them to have pride in their heritage, and to accept cultural differences among diverse individuals and groups so that they may understand better their place within the greater American multicultural society.

PARTICIPANTS:  Limited to a maximum of 50 high school juniors and seniors (11th  to 12th grade) of Asian descent as well as non-Asian students who are recommended by local Asian American community organizations and schools in San Antonio through an application process (See Application Below)

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION:  Oct. 24th, 2008.

COSTS:  Selected participants pay only an initial $10 registration fee.  This fee may be waived upon request, if there is financial need.   All other program costs and expenses are funded by a generous grant from the Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation.

STAFF: Volunteer coordinators, guest speakers from professional, educational, business, governmental, and community institutions and organizations; members of local Asian American associations.
